Pakistan contacts FBI for assistance in Axact scandal

ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan contacted US intelligence agency Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for assistance in the fake degree scandal of IT company Axact.

In its letter to the FBI, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry has requested assistance for the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) which is probing the Axact scandal.

On Saturday, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced that the government would contact the FBI and Interpol for assistance in the Axact scandal. Nisar added that assistance may also be sought from the UK.

Nisar told reporters that substantive evidence had been found during the initial investigation of the fake degree scam. The interior minister reaffirmed that the investigation would be carried out in a transparent matter.

The Axact scandal came to light with the New York Times published an investigative report claiming that the Pakistani IT company had made millions selling fake degrees online.

Following the NYT story, Pakistan authorities were quick to act as Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to launch a probe into the company.
