DHAKA: Following the first ever clean sweep in the recently concluded One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Pakistan, spirited Bangladesh on Friday defeated the visiting side with seven wickets and 22 balls to spare and clinched the series 1-0.

Senior campaigner Shakib Al Hasan and newcomer Sabbir Rahman were the main stay in the Bangladeshi innings.

Both batsmen plundered unbeaten half-centuries as Bangladesh, cheered from the stands by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, surpassed the target in the 17th over.

The pair put on 105 runs for the fourth wicket after Bangladesh appeared to be in a spot of bother at 38 for three in the sixth over.

Bangladesh, who had lost both their previous Twenty20 internationals against Pakistan, turned the tables with a dominant performance.

Bangladesh lost three wickets cheaply, including the vital one of Tamin Iqbal, who had hit two consecutive centuries in the one-dayers.

But Shakib and Sabbir hammered the Pakistan bowlers to all parts of the ground, signalling out left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who went for 39 runs in his four overs.

Sabbir Rahman was adjudicated the man of the match.

With three consecutive ODI wins in the bag, the spirited Bangladesh bowlers earlier restricted Pakistan to 141 for five.

Debutant opener Mukhtar Ahmed remained top scorer with 37. Mohammad Hafiz made 26 while Haris Sohail remained unbeaten on 30.

Bangladesh's new seamer Mustafizur Rahman took two for 20 in his allotted four overs. The 19-year-old left-armer showed no signs of nerves as he grabbed the key wickets of skipper Shahid Afridi and senior all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez during a tidy spell.

Opener Ahmed Shehzad plodded to 17 from 31 balls and Afridi was unlucky to be given out caught behind for 12 when replays showed the ball missing the edge of the bat.

Pakistan were 77 for three in 12.1 overs before Sohail and Hafeez (26) boosted the total by adding 49 for the fourth wicket.

Bangladesh had swept the preceding one-day series 3-0. The T20 game will be followed by a two-Test series starting on Tuesday.

Earlier, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi won the toss and elected to bat at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

“I know how important this game is for us. We are all focused and keen to win this game,” Afridi said at the toss.

The skipper added the team would be looking to score 160-170 against Bangladesh– AFP/Geo News
