KARACHI: Defending Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain, who is in deep water for threatening Rangers officers, Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif on Tuesday said that ‘extra-judicial killing’ of party workers overwhelmed him before issuing the controversial statement.

Speaking in Geo News programme “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath”, Saif said that Hussain did not threaten anyone and his statement was largely taken out of context.

"He is only human and can make mistakes... he was disturbed with reports of extra-judicial killing of workers," said the newly elected MQM Senator.

The MQM chief had allegedly threatened Rangers officials while speaking in Khanzada show following a raid on the party headquarter Nine-Zero in Karachi last week.

Responding to a question regarding Rangers personnel, Altaf Hussain had referred to them as a thing of the past. “Woh thay nahin, thay hogaye… aur ho jaingay,” he said.

Earlier in the day, an FIR was registered against Hussain in Civil Lines Police Station, on the request of Rangers spokesman Colonel Tahir under the section-7 of Anti-Terrorism Act and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Barrister Saif, during today’s interview, vowed to fight the case registered against the MQM chief on every forum.

Rangers officer Colonel Tahir felt that he was being threatened and he used his prerogative to file a case, he said. However, only a court of law has the right to declare the one guilty or not guilty, he added.

Ruling out the notion regarding MQM’s uneasy relations with armed forces, Senator Saif said the party enjoys good ties with the military and respects all law enforcement agencies besides supporting Pakistan Army in its ongoing war against terrorism.
