ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday sought assistance from the Attorney General (AG) regarding a contempt petition filed against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for not holding Local Government polls in Cantonment Board areas.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja while hearing the contempt plea, filed by Raja Rub Nawaz in 2014, said that the court will not hesitate to take action against the PM if necessary as action against chief executives has also been taken in previous cases.

The petitioner had said that that by not holding the LG polls, the PM breached the constitution as well as court orders. LG polls have not been held in cantonment areas for the past 15 years.

However, the court withheld its decision and consulted the AG to assist the court on this matter.

The case was adjourned till March 3.

Meanwhile, Justice Khawaja also said that the provincial governments should not further delay the matter of Local Government elections and should come ready with answers during the next hearing on March 3.

He added that those provinces that have given their word but do not implement it will face action.
