Former Pakistan cricketers criticise Bangladesh flag ban

- March 26, 2014 - Updated 1537 PKT - From Web Edition

KARACHI: Former Pakistani players hit out after Bangladesh banned their own fans from waving non-Bangladeshi flags at the ongoing World Twenty20 tournament.

Hosts Bangladesh issued the order after an outcry over images of locals waving Pakistani flags during the recent Asia Cup.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made the ruling on Tuesday, on the eve of the country’s 44th Independence Day.

Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad said the move violated the spirit of the game.

“I am surprised at the decision,” Miandad told AFP. “Cricket is a game which harbours sportsman spirit and this decision violates that spirit.”

Another former captain, Mohammad Yousuf, urged the BCB to rethink.

“I am sure that the BCB will take this decision back because it defies logic and I am sure the International Cricket Council will seek some explanation,” Yousuf said.

Yousuf, who played 90 Tests and 288 ODIs for Pakistan, said he had always been warmly received in Bangladesh.

“I have seen the home fans want to support Pakistan whenever their own team is not competing against us,” he said.

Younis Khan, another former captain, agreed Bangladesh should reconsider their decision.

“It is against the spirit of the game as you cannot stop anyone from supporting his favourite team,” he said.

Bangladesh and Pakistan face each other in a potentially crucial World T20 group match in Mirpur on Sunday.

Petty minded Bangladesh officials are running the board, yes, very petty indeed. They need to open open up their thinking and hearts to every game and for everyone. None of my friends in Karachi criticize me for saying that the new World Cup 2015 champions and holders will be New Zealand, InshAllah. Salams

@ Golam! your thinking depicts your name, you are a real golam of petty and biased approach. Everyone knows which country is the centre of match fixing and betting but Governments don't take such decisions which are against the goodwill of game. Only petty minded and biased people would restrict or dictate spectators to cheer for their favourites.

stupid people and stupid board look like sick minded

As if Pakistani players are all for the spirit of the sport. The players offer their prayers in the field, and then take the bribe behind the doors. Pathetic people. If Bangladesh bans the flying of Pakistani flag, it is their right. Pakistan should be grateful that Bangladesh has allowed Pakistan to play in their country.

What would,Bangladeshi Cricket Board think of people from their country, holding British nationality, supporting Bangla Deshi team & waving their flag at match in UK against English team. This is simply mind boggling to dictate which team you can support & which team you can not! Naiyer London
