GUJRAT: Sixteen children and a teacher were killed when their school bus caught fire in Mangowal area of Gujrat on Saturday, police said.

Seven other children were injured in the blaze which destroyed the vehicle.

The van was carrying 24 children to a private school in Gujrat, about 112 kilometres (70 miles) north of the eastern city on Lahore, when it caught fire, DPO Dar Ali Khattak told.

"The fire erupted in the vehicle when the children were only a few kilometres from their school," he said.

The blaze was apparently caused by a spark when the driver of the dual-fuel van switched from gas to petrol, he said, adding that the fuel gas cylinder was intact.

The children were aged between five and 15 years old, he said, adding that a female teacher also died.

DPO Dar Ali Khatak told that investigation has started and all the concerned parties including vehicle fitness officials will be investigated.

Another police official said the driver fled after the fire.

Five of the injured children were in serious condition, hospital officials said.

It may be mentioned that vehicles in Pakistan are mostly run on both petrol and natural gas.

I along with the rest of people in this country request immediate resignation from the Minister of Transportation Punjab. We also want that criminal negligence cases be registered against the local administration responsible for public transport safety. The chief Justice should take suo motu notice of this case

It is a shame on our corrupt system. When we will become human beings, we are the only nation on earth, which is killing their own children. We have a Ministry of Transport, Excise department, police and judiciary. But sorry to say no body is doing their job. We as a nation have absolutely no regard for human life. Each and every person is involved in corruption to feed his family, but guess what we all are actually preparing graves for our dear ones by not following the safety codes and rules

Another sad-incedent: this time innocent-minors lost their lives. I’m wondering still ppl are using inappropriate-gas-slander in their vehicles without getting fitness-certificate from concerned authorities. How sad!

These are lpg cylinders which are used in homes but now for sake of saving some money these transporters put those cylinders in their vehicles and also put a great threat to passengers. This situation is same in public transport of lahore. I request all to stop using these vehicles for their transport in this scorching heat. And I request govt to take notice of this issue.
