Young offenders sensitized on health issues in Karachi

KARACHI: Young offenders serving terms in Karachi Central Jail were sensitized about general, mental and reproductive health problems and preventive measures with a view to promote healthy living practices among them.

 

Youth Affairs Department Government of Sindh in collaboration with SHED organized a two-day health awareness training workshop titled “Disease Free Life is Everyone’s Right” at Youth Offenders Reformatory School, Karachi Central Jail.

 

A large number of young inmates serving their sentences at main the prison of the metropolis took keen interest in the workshop which also incorporated interactive sessions.

 

Creating awareness among the participating youth offenders,

 

Lead trainer of SHED, Abdul Sami Khan threw light on various health-related problems such as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), AIDS, Hepatitis besides training them on ways and means to cope with stress and depression.

 

Mr Sami also underscored the significance of creative and critical thinking for the youth to make progress in today’s world where the only way to accomplish big goals is to compete their way through tough competition.

 

The young offenders attentively participated in the moot which also equipped them with necessary information in connection with preventive measures and preventive strategies on various physical and mental diseases or disorders.

 

Mr. Saleem Ahmed Siddiqui, Deputy Secretary, Youth Affairs Department Government of Sindh read the message of Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh & Secretary Youth Affairs Government of Sindh. He also highlighted the role and activities for youth development being undertaken by the department over the period of last five years.

 

At the end of the workshop, Mr. Zaheer Babar President SHED, along with Assistant Superintendent Jail Mr. Naveed Ahmed Khan distributed gifts among the participating youths.

 

A similar workshop was also organized for female youth offenders at Women Central Jail, Karachi.

 

The lead trainers of SHED, Dr. Shabana Shaikh and Dr. Farhana Shahid conducted the moot.

 

During the workshop, Ms Sumaira Mushtaq, Project Director Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sind, read the message of Mr. Saleem Ahmed Siddiqui, Deputy Secretary, Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sindh.

 

Ms Sumaira Mushtaq along with Dr. Farhana Shahid and Dr. Shabana Shaikh of SHED distributed presents among the female youths in attendance of the moot.
