MIRAMSHAH: A US drone crashed in the Mir Ali area in North Waziristan on Saturday and the local Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for bringing it down.

The drone came down in Machikhel village of Mir Ali subdivision.

The local Taliban led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur claimed that they had brought down the drone after firing at it with heavy weapons Saturday evening.

They said wreckage of the drone had been retrieved and its pictures would be provided to the media today (Sunday).

Some reports said the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed due to technical fault and the militants later got hold of its wreckage.

This is probably the first time that a US drone has come down in North Waziristan.

The CIA-operated spy planes have increasingly targeted North Waziristan while hunting for the members of al-Qaeda, Afghan Taliban, Haqqani Network and Pakistani militants aligned to the TTP and Hafiz Gul Bahadur. In fact, more drone strikes have taken place in North Waziristan than any other tribal area in Pakistan.

Scores of militants, including both foreigners and locals, and many more civilians have been killed in the US drone strikes.
