PESHAWAR: A number of human rights activists and workers of several non-government organisations held on Thursday a joint sit-in outside the Peshawar Press Club against child and forced marriages, asking the provincial government to enforce the relevant law to end child marriages in the province.
The protest camp was held under the banner of Tribal NGOs Consortium, MEN UNiTE, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Civil Society Network and National Action Coordination Group (NACG).
Besides civil society activists, lawyers, teachers, working women and students participated in the one-day sit-in, which demanded the government to provide a timeframe for the legislation to prevent and respond to the cases of child marriages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
They said the legislation had been pending for the last two years and the government had shown a lack of will to introduce this bill in the assembly.
