MARDAN: Faculty members and administration staff of the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan (Awku) have threatened to close down the institution and all of its campuses if Vice-Chancellor Dr Ihsan Ali was not released forthwith.
The university’s staff protested outside the Mardan Press Club on Thursday against the arrest of Prof Dr Ihsan Ali by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Led by Sheraz Paracha, Chairman of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department, Dr Jahanzeb, Dean of the Social Sciences, and chairmen of other departments of the university, the protesters chanted slogans in support of the arrested vice-chancellor.
The speakers condemned the arrest of Dr Ihsan Ali and said that arrest of educationists by NAB was a shameful act. They said the nation gave respect to its educationists while the NAB arrested them without giving them any notice.
They added that for the first time in Pakistani history, the PhD scholars were protesting on roads. They said that through 18th Amendment, power had been devolved to provinces and NAB, being a federal institution, should not interfere in the affairs of provincial institutions.
The speakers added that prime minister had advised the NAB not to arrest any politician without solid proof and inquiry while educationists are being arrested without any proof and inquiry in the province.
They added that the NAB called Dr Ihsan Ali for a meeting and later arrested him without any notice, which they termed against the law.
The speakers demanded immediate release of the vice-chancellor. They warned of closing the university and its campuses if Dr Ihsan Ali was not released within three days.
On the occasion, a resolution was also passed, demanding the judiciary to take action in this connection.
