Legal ethics
It is a reality that our legal bodies like bar councils, bar associations etc are not always successful in upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in our legal profession. Unrepresented litigants constitute an increasing percentage of those appearing in the courts. The trend is likely to continue. In recent years, a significant number of lawyers have been found violating rules and principles of the legal code of ethics.
It is proposed significant efforts be made by provincial bar councils and the Supreme Court Bar Association, among others, to ensure the observance of the code of ethics by our legal fraternity members. Second, the judicial academies should arrange training courses on ethics. Training academies or development centres for lawyer may also be set up and senior lawyers, jurists, intellectuals may be appointed there. Competent and conscientious performance by all key players of the justice system is the most effective way to maintain respect for rule of law. Such steps will not only build the professional capabilities and skills of our court officers to perform their duties faithfully but also help enhance the trust and confidence of our citizens in our legal and judicial system.
