PESHAWAR: The Capital City Police authorities here Monday were provided the CCTV footage and videos of Friday’s violent protests to identify those involved in ransacking and torching public and private property, it was learnt on Monday.

The city police are finding it hard to arrest those involved in destruction of the properties as most of the protest rallies were staged by political and religious leaders. The trouble started when the leaders left the rallies after delivering their speeches.

Goods worth millions of rupees were torched, destroyed and looted by criminal elements in guise of protestors on Friday. Besides shops, markets, traffic signals, billboards and other installations, these elements attacked four cinema houses, the office of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industries and other buildings.

An official of the city police said around 20 people were arrested from different parts of Peshawar on Sunday and Monday. He said they were being interrogated at different police lockups.

Cases have been registered at different police stations of the city, including Hashtnagri, Faqirabad, West Cantonment and Tehkal, against a number of unknown people in the killing of six persons, injuries to 57 others as well as damage and plunder of properties worth millions of rupees.
