PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Human Rights Movement on Monday petitioned the Peshawar High Court for safe recovery of Shahbaz Taseer, son of late Punjab governor Salman Taseer, claiming that the detenue was reportedly in the tribal areas in the custody of the spy agencies or political authorities.

Chairman Pakistan Human Rights Movement and advocate of the Supreme Court, Mian Mohibullah Kakakhel, and secretary, Muhammad Farooq Afridi, filed the writ petition on behalf of Shahbaz Taseer. They prayed the court to direct the relevant intelligence agencies to constitute teams to probe the case of the missing son of the late governor.

Director General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence, Islamabad, DG Military Intelligence, DG Federal Investigation Agency, Federation through Secretary Interior, Ministry of Interior, governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through secretary to the governor and the political authorities were made parties in the petition.

The petitioners claimed Shahbaz Taseer was reportedly confined in the tribal areas and was in the custody of the intelligence agencies. It said the detenue was picked up by unknown persons on August 2, 2011 from Lahore when he was on way to his office. It said his family had lodged first information report and requested the court to take suo moto notice of the matter.

The Pakistan Human Rights Movement submitted that it did not matter whose son was the detenue, but he was the citizen of Pakistan first and deserved equal protection as it was the responsibility of the state to provide protection to its citizens.

It said that family members told the organisation that many enquiries had been held showing that the detenue was being kept somewhere in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or the tribal areas and many teams were formed to recover him, but to no avail.

It said on January 21, 2011 Punjab Inspector General of Police Javed Iqbal stated that Shahbaz Taseer was in Waziristan along with an American citizen, Warren Weinstein who was kidnapped later from Model Town Lahore. He said efforts were underway and investigation was being held through IGP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
