Islamabad: Yemeni Nobel Peace Award winner Tawakkol Abdel-Salam Karman visited the Faisal Masjid campus of the International Islamic University (IIU) and said terrorism could be beaten with love and that women would have to play a key role in the dissemination of peace.
“Islam has nothing to do with terrorism, while it’s a religion of moderation and peace," said Tawakkol Abdel-Salam, a journalist and human rights activist.
Tawakkol Karman is a co-recipient of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first Yemeni, the first Arab woman, and the second Muslim woman to win a Nobel Prize and the second youngest Nobel Peace Laureate to date.
She said Muslim women must be given due opportunities of leadership as they are integral part of the society.
The Nobel Peace laureate lauded IIU’s services for Muslim Ummah and said universities such as IIU could play a vital role in the promotion of peace and brotherhood. She appreciated the facilities of learning integrated with teachings of Islam being given to the women enrolled in the IIU. She also took keen interest in the architecture of Faisal Masjid.
Earlier, the IIU officials briefed the visitor about Faisal Masjid and the university.
Later, Tawakkol Abdel-Salam Karman called on IIU President Dr. Ahmed Yousif Al-Draiweesh, who later presented her a university souvenir.
