HEC joins hands with Unesco for collaboration in education

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) will collaborate in the field of education. Both sides will identify specific areas of further strengthening of higher education sector in the country.
This was discussed in a meeting between HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and Unesco Director Vibeke Jensen who visited the HEC Secretariat on Wednesday.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed shared different initiatives of HEC for developing institutional facilities, introduction of new disciplines in market based technologies, development of human resource including faculty, improvement in research facilities, enhancement of technological infrastructure, Pakistan Education and Research Network, Digital Library, and linkages with different foreign universities.
The HEC chairman elaborated how HEC has been endeavouring to build capacity of researchers and support universities for promotion and commercialisation of research. He also informed the Unesco representative about scholarship opportunities provided by HEC to needy and meritorious students, besides explaining HEC’s collaboration with United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, China, Germany, France and international organisations.
Dr. Mukhtar hoped that the HEC will have a productive partnership with Unesco for advancing the cause of education in Pakistan.
Jensen briefed the HEC chairman on the upcoming Unesco initiative whereby rural areas of the country will be targeted for promotion of educational opportunities as well as spreading awareness for education of the female population.
