‘International Literacy Day’ will be observed on (today) September 8, Tuesday on the globe to help join communities to act as a united voice in raising awareness for those who cannot read or write.
International Literacy Day gives children and communities a chance to rediscover the joys of reading while raising awareness for those without access to education.
In this regard, special programmes are being scheduled in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to commemorate the day and highlight its importance.
Federal Directorate of Education would hold a ceremony at Islamabad Model School for Girls F-7/2, Islamabad at 10 a.m. chaired by Minister of State for Capital Administration and Development Division, Barrister Usman Ibrahim.
National Commission for Human Development would hold a walk at 11.00 am from China Chowk to D Chowk in which government officials, representatives of donors agencies, Non Government Organizations and 500 students from High schools of federal capital would participate.
Other organizations would also hold seminars and dialogue to raise the issue with the particular emphasis on the challenges faced by Pakistan.
According to the global monitoring report over education, it is noted that one among the five man and two third women is illiterate.
Some of them have minimum literacy skills, some children are still out of school and some are irregularly attending the school.
South and West Asia is noted to have the lowest adult literacy rate of about 58.6 per cent. The countries with the lowest literacy rate are Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
Literacy is not only a basic human right, but it is a fundamental building block for learning as well as a personal empowerment tool.
It is the catalyst for social and global progress.
The International Literacy Day was decided by the UNESCO on November 7th in 1965 to celebrate it at 8th of September every year which was celebrated first time in the year 1966.
