About 70% work on the underpass on right side of the Nullah Leh Bridge at Moti Mehal Chowk has been completed while the remaining work is likely to be completed by the middle of September this year as the task is being carried out at a fast pace.
According to reliable sources, work on completion of the bridge was to be completed on July 31, 2015, however, due to certain reasons work on the project was delayed.
Giving major reasons for delay in completion of work on the project on scheduled date, sources said that the design of the underpass was changed by Nespak. In addition to it, the drilling machine developed fault. The delay was also caused by heavy monsoon rains.
The drilling machine has been procured again. Now work is being carried out at a fast pace under the supervision of the officials of civic bodies, contractor and the City District Government, Rawalpindi, sources said.
Rawalpindi Commissioner Captain (r) Zahid Saeed agreed with sources that work on the project of underpass at Moti Mehal, Liaquat Bagh, is being done at a rapid speed and would be completed within three weeks. With completion of work, the road of underpass would be opened for traffic moving from Tipu Road to Liaquat Bagh.
According to the commissioner, the problem of traffic congestion at Benazir Bhutto Road has been resolved to a larger extent with the implementation of projects like flyovers, widening of roads and the Metro Bus Service. Due to linking roads, the traffic remained choked at Liaquat Bagh but this problem would be over with completion of construction work on the other side of the Nullah Leh Bridge.
Zahid Saeed said that the entire Benazir Bhutto Road has been made traffic signal-free and vehicles move smoothly without any stoppage.
Moreover, the work on the underpass at Liaquat Bagh has also resolved the Nullah Leh issue. Elaborating, he said that the length and width of the bridge has been widened and the Nullah Leh rainwater would now pass smoothly.
According to him, more projects, big and small, are on the cards to provide relief to the residents of Rawalpindi from disaster caused by Nullah Leh during monsoon season. One of the major projects is cleaning and desilting of the Nullah Leh tributaries in densely-populated localities by the Solid Waste Management Department to keep water flowing without any hindrance.
