Rawalpindi The Al Khidmat Foundation Pakistan (AKP) is preparing to launch a new ambulance service in the twin cities in a couple of months. AKP President Muhammad Abdus Shakoor told journalists that the foundation had been allotted '1023' as emergency number for its ambulance service which like other parts of the country, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern parts of Punjab, would operate in a few weeks. He said the ambulance service in Rawalpindi and Islamabad would start in November this year, saying that currently the AKP possessed fully-equipped 261 ambulances. He said that at present the Al Khidmat Foundation was providing six services, including health, education, clean water, orphan care, 'Makhawat' service (to help needy people stand on their feet) and community services like dowry distribution, distribution of wheelchairs, rehabilitation of mosques, prisoners' relief and minority matters. Under the orphans care programme, Abdus Shakoor said the number of Agosh Centres meant for orphans' education would increase from existing six to 14 in coming years. He said the Al Khidmat Foundation due to its activities in the social sector has also achieved international recognition besides becoming part of a number of worldwide organisations.
