The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has worked out a plan for improving the overall sewerage system in all 10 wards falling in its jurisdiction in view of the disaster witnessed during recent heavy rains, which resulted in accumulation of water in different parts of Rawalpindi Cantonment.
Talking on the plan to implement the project, RCB Executive Officer Fahim Zafar Khan gave a detailed briefing to execute it in an effective way.
Fahim Zafar said that his top priority is to improve the sewerage system in all parts of RCB for which an allocation of over Rs10 million has been made in the Annual Development Plan.
He stated that as part of the plan they would improve the cleanliness system so that water does not inundate streets and roads.
He said that drains would be constructed to improve the flow of water, particularly in low-lying areas. Special emphasis is being laid on to clean the big and small drains in every locality.
The presence of garbage in streets and along roads results in choking of drains, he said. In order to resolve this problem, the RCB has decided to procure land where trenches would be dug for garbage dumping. These trenches, he said, would then be covered to stop stench. The land for this purpose would be allotted free of cost to the RCB by influential people.
The complete plan would be launched from Gawalmandi, People's Colony, Tench Bhata, Ahata Mithu Khan, Saddar and Westridge.
A survey work has been initiated in this regard to prepare a strategy for enforcing the plan in a proper way.
Similarly, the RCB would procure 10 mini-trucks to collect household wastage from door-to-door on daily basis.
He said that the sanitation section is being improved and the staff has been directed to perform their duties in their respective areas in order to keep the localities clean. “Fork-lifters would also be purchased to lift garbage from streets, roads and vacant plots,” he added.
