As many as 6,000 patients experiencing Hepatitis-C complications sought admission at the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU)-Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) over the past one year. On the average, 1,500 new patients of Hepatitis-C are diagnosed at PIMS every single month.
Dr. Waseem Khawaja shared this piece of news on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day here on Tuesday. He added that 40 to 50 patients suffering from Hepatitis-C remain admitted for treatment at PIMS, any time of the month or year. He clarified that not every patient suffering from Hepatitis-C requires administration of Interferon injections. He said Pakistan Baitul Mal is supporting free treatment of 3,000 Hepatitis patients at PIMS.
Dr. Waseem Khawaja reminded that 80 per cent of the Hepatitis B and C patients have no symptoms for years. He disclosed that 2,000 AIDS patients are also suffering with Hepatitis-C. “As many as 18,000 children have been vaccinated against Hepatitis-B over the past one year,” he added.
