FJWU holds impressive convocation

The 14th Convocation of Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) was held at the Jinnah Convention Centre here on Wednesday.
FJWU Chancellor and Punjab Governor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana awarded degrees to the graduating students. HEC Executive Director Mansoor Akbar Kundi was also present on the occasion.
The chancellor of the university, Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, while speaking on the occasion, said: “I salute the parents who have have managed to afford the expenses of their children despite their limited resources. The graduating students also deserve appreciation because they managed to achieve this landmark despite all odds.”
Addressing students at the convocation, he said: “You got the opportunity to acquire higher education but there are many people who do not have the resources to pursue their education. You have to serve such people and make life easier for them and make a difference in their lives. The real education is geared towards kindling the inner fire for knowledge. Teachers’ role cannot be overlooked because they groom students and help them reach the skies.”
Earlier, FJWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samina Amin Qadir said that the Fatima Jinnah Women University proudly owns the hallmark of being the first women's university of Pakistan. Established in 1998, the FJWU has not only become a paragon for women's universities, but also included among leading degree-awarding institutes. It is currently ranked at 4th position among medium-size public universities of Pakistan.

This year, a number of sponsored gold medals have also been awarded to the students with outstanding achievements. In this regard, National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) Foundation has sponsored two gold medals and cash prize of Rs5,000 each for PhD scholars of the Department of Environmental Sciences.
A gold medal was instituted by the First Women Bank in 2005. The coveted award for the academic session 2012-2014 went to Ms. Samreen Baber of the Department of Economics.
Another gold medal and cash prize of Rs15,000 was instituted by The Bank of Punjab in 2012 for the top-scoring students of the Business Administration Department. The coveted award for the academic session 2010-2014 went to Ms. Fatima Shabbir of the Department of Business Administration.
The Media Development Trust (Mishal Pakistan) also sponsored two gold medals for the top-scoring students of the Media and Communication Studies. This year, these gold medals were given to Ms. Mehar Inam and Ms. Maham Javed of the Department of Communication and Media Studies.
Dr. Samina Amin Qadir said that in the 14th convocation of the university, the total number of PhD students was two, whereas 63 students were awarded M.Phil degrees. The number of students at master's level was 612 and the number of students at bachelor's level was 521. Gold and silver medals were awarded to 69 students. In eight departments, M.Phil degrees leading to PhD were awarded. She said that the FJWU has 48 PhD faculty members and 10 faculty members would be coming back this year after completing their PhD degrees.
The vice chancellor said that the total budget of the university is Rs1083.746 million, from which 50% (504.679 million) is being generated by the university. "We manage this through the nominal fees we receive from students. We have only received Rs41 million from Rs220 million which was pledged by the CM for our hostel. Another hostel wing is being constructed by USAID for the Department of Education. The HEC has also given us grant for the construction of a sports centre in the university. In addition to this, an amount of Rs10 million has been given to us by the HEC for security arrangements," she said.
She said that for the new campus at Chakri Road, two PC-1s worth Rs900 million have been submitted. "The boundary walls have already been raised. After approval of the PC-1, we can start construction. A tube well has been installed in the new campus. Four disciplines which will be introduced in the new campus are physics, chemistry, law and commerce. The commerce course has already been started in the existing campus in the evening," she said.
According to her, in all, the FJWU students have received 4,236 laptops, through PM Scheme 442 and through CM scheme 3794 laptops were awarded to the students. "The H-8 College is already associated with the FJWU and we also want Viqar-un-Nisa College and Satellite Town College to get affiliated with us," she said.
She informed that for first time they are allocating budget for the evaluation fees for research papers to be published in international journals. Two international conferences were also organised this year.
