Students of Communication and Media Studies (CMS), under the supervision of Sarah A. Hashmi, a lecturer, organised a series of seminars at the Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU).
Renowned media persons and academicians were invited as guest speakers to share their opinions and thoughts.
In the seminar titled ‘International Media Discourse of War: From Cold War to War on Terror’ guest speakers were Dr. M. Zafar Iqbal, chairman & associate professor at the Department of Communication and Media Studies, and Syed Talat Hussain, senior journalist, columnist and foreign policy commentator.
Guest speakers discussed the role of international media since the cold war to war on terror that how media propagates the ideology in the mind of public and influence their opinions.
Dr. Zafar Iqbal said that people should not blindly believe what media conveys to them but should also critically analyse the content with their own knowledge on the subject. He urged that as media students they should go into depth of media content and confirm it.
They also discussed the role of media and media persons during various wars.
Seminar on ‘Media, Propaganda and Public Mind’ was addressed by Ahmed Qureshi, journalist, columnist and public policy commentator.
Ahmed Qureshi said that the current media has proved that it is the fourth pillar of a democratic state as it is exposing issues of accountability and good governance. He also talked about Pakistani media, which needs fundamental development in order to compete with international media. He said that you have clear convictions as it gives you direction to come forward. He shared his opinion on the working in various media channels.
Seminars were followed by an interactive question-answer session in which students asked relevant questions.
