Labour Day was celebrated at Sadeeqa’s Learning System (SLS) Montessori & High School, Islamabad campus, says a press release.
A special assembly was prepared by the students to highlight the plights and the importance of the rights of labourers, especially in Pakistan. The cleaning, facility maintenance and security staff of the Islamabad campus comprising of eight women and 12 men were the special guests for the event.
With the first ever trade union for domestic workers in Pakistan being registered in Lahore in the beginning of this year, this Labour Day celebration held a special meaning. The students and staff were given an introduction on Labour Day in Pakistan and why it was declared a national holiday. Students then performed a heart wrenching skit on child labour. As lucky school-going children passed by child labourers working in a repair shop, the child worker’s emotions and dreams were brought to the forefront. A student then performed a beautiful poem that spoke the words of a child labourer. The skit and poem beautifully captured the unfairness of so many childhoods in our country that are never essentially childhoods. An upbeat national song lightened the tone a little by reminding us that we indeed can be the forces of change in our country.
Every year in their Community Service Week, the students of SLS School collect funds to give to different causes. Out of these funds, the students and teachers of the Islamabad campus buy summer clothes for their school staff. The cleaning, facility maintenance and security staff of the Islamabad campus were then individually called on stage by the Principal, Mrs. Shahida Khurshid, given heartfelt thanks and presented with their gifts. Mrs. Khurshid told the student body that a school is run on team work and today they were celebrating the very important people in the team who did pivotal work in their school; they kept their school clean, kept up its maintenance and kept it safe. The students and teachers showed their appreciation for the staff by giving them a thundering round of applause.
