The 26th Convocation of the Federal Government College for Women, Kashmir Road, was held here on Thursday.
Medals, degrees, rolls of honour and merit certificates were given to the students of BA, BSc, MA English and MA Urdu for academic sessions 2010-2012 and 2011-2013. Director General Human Resource Development Directorate Major General Muhammad Iqbal Asi was the chief guest on the occasion.
In her welcome address, Principal Nasreen Mirza presented a brief synopsis of curricular and co-curricular activities of the college for last two academic years. “The efforts of the students under the guidance of their teachers yielded a rich harvest of 69 individual prizes and 17 trophies for the year 2013-14; whereas in the session 2014-15, 38 individual prizes and nine trophies were secured. We have been the recipient of the FGEI C/G Trophy for Best Performance in Sports and Co-Curricular Activities for five consecutive years i.e. 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014,” she said. Two of our teams, the volleyball team and the badminton team won the award of ‘Overall Best Team’ in the competitions held by FGEI C/G. Furthermore, our teams secured third position in table tennis, volleyball and athletics competitions held by FBISE, Islamabad. Our students also excelled in fine art competitions in which Hajra Mehmood won a cash prize of five thousand rupees in the competition held by NAB and another of two thousand rupees at PNCA,” she said.
As many as 964 graduates were awarded degrees in all for the two sessions. Sana Afzal (BSc, 2011-13), Saba Pervaiz (MA Urdu, 2010-12) and Reena Shakeel (MA Urdu, 2011-13) were conferred gold medals and rolls of honour for their brilliant performance in the Punjab University examinations.
The recipients of rolls of honour as well as silver medals for their meritorious performance were Zill-e-Huma (BSc, 2010-12), Amna Tariq (BSc, 2011-13), Rana Muneer (BA, 2010-12) and Shagufta Tariq (BA, 2011-13).
Silver medals were awarded to Almas Fayyaz (MA Urdu, 2010-12), Maliha Arooj (MA Urdu, 2011-13), Ayesha Siddiqa-tul-Kubra (BSc, 2011-13), while rolls of honour were bestowed upon Maria Nida (MA English, 2010-12), Nadia Shah (MA English, 2011-13) and Tasneem Sadia (BSc 2010-12).
The coveted Begum Salma Masud Award (Gold) was secured this year by Mehreen Sajjad (BSc) for academic excellence in the session 2014-15.
The chief guest gave away degrees and certificates to the students and distributed medals among them.
Speaking on the occasion, he congratulated the students and declared the teaching profession to be a sacred mission. “Your graduation is not the end, in fact it is just the beginning. You should work hard and all your efforts should benefit your country. This is the meaning of purposeful education. We are fully aware of the multiple needs of quality education that are necessary to mould the dynamics of education. In this regard, I appreciate the FGEI Directorate for its effort to impart effective and purposeful education,” he said.
