Speakers at a seminar held here at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) paid rich tributes to eminent writer and poet Qasim Yaqub for writing a rare book on ‘literary theory’ and said it was a rare initiative on his part to promote contemporary Urdu language and literature.
The seminar was a part of `Book and Author’ series, undertaken by AIOU to promote social, literary and cultural activities. It was arranged by the Urdu department of the University, said a news release issued here on Sunday.
The speakers included Prof. Abdul Aziz Sahir, Dr. Arshad Mahmood Noshad, Farrakh Nadeem and Yaseen Afaqi highlighted the recent developments in ‘Urdu Adab’ both in theory and practices and appreciated writer’s efforts of explaining in detail the theoretical aspects of Urdu literature.
Qasim Yaqub, editor of Literary Research Journal `Nikaat’ explained various dimensions and aspects of literary theory, with special reference to text and context of each word and subject matter, stating ‘it is science to understand proper meaning of words.’
The book was a compilation of various articles on literary theory, in which the author explained relevant concepts and approaches to understand the true meaning of words, keeping view their context.
Vice chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Saddiqui while presiding over the seminar said in 1960s there was deliberate attempt to re-establish connection between language study, historical study and philosophical questions.
Critical theory unlike conventional criticism embraced cultural theory as well. It dealt with questions of power and politics. He lauded the efforts of the writer in establishing relations between the text and context, both in critical and interpreting term.
He also appreciated the writer’s skill and talents in introducing literary theory, through his poetry.
Dr. Saddiqui said that the efforts are being made to develop the AIOU as a vibrant Centre of literary and cultural activities. Writers and poets are being provided a platform to present their work for the benefit of the people. Highlighting his priority areas, he said special focus is also being laid on development of creative knowledge and research-based education.
While, consolidating the on-going academic programmes, the main target is on promotion of research-based activities, strengthening of students’ support system, updating curriculum and text books and pushing forward professional development.
