Rawalpindi: The first secretary of the embassy of a Scandinavian country in Islamabad was held at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) by the Airport Security Force (ASF) with a 9mm pistol, 11 bullets and a magazine in his handbag during checking when he was proceeding to Istanbul by Turkish Airline’s flight TK-711 Tuesday morning, ASF sources told ‘The News’.

The diplomat was later allowed to proceed on the intervention of the federal government, sources said.

The ASF authorities confirmed the report but with the condition of not exposing their identity said that the diplomat was released when he tendered an apology to the ASF authorities, saying that it happened unintentionally. The authorities, accepting his apology, allowed him to travel on the same flight. Sources said that no inquiry was held on the episode to ascertain the fact why he was carrying arms and ammunition with him.
