Islamabad: A woman was run over by a speeding vehicle, a part of the motorcade of a top officer of the Pakistan Navy, on Islamabad Expressway near Zia Masjid on Tuesday afternoon, the police spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Navy, when contacted by this correspondent, confirmed the accident, saying that the authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident and action would be taken after the outcome and the recommendation of the investigation team.

An angry mob blocked the Islamabad Expressway to register its protest against the attitude of the personnel escorting the dignitary. People intercepted another jeep, belonging to the Pakistan Navy, and handed it over to the Shahzad Town Police. Police have impounded the jeep, the police spokesman said.

Eyewitnesses told journalists that the 35-year-old woman, hailing from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), whose identity could not be ascertained yet, was crossing Islamabad Expressway when the speeding jeep, a part of the Pakistan Navy motorcade, crushed her under its wheels. The driver of the vehicle managed to escape from the scene, eyewitnesses said.
