LAHORE
At least two people were killed while 10 sustained injuries after two bogies of Karachi Express collided with a cargo-container carrying trailer at a manned crossing between Premnagar and Raiwind.
The train was on course its routine route when the driver had to apply emergency brakes after he saw a cargo-container carrying trailer on the track. The crossing where the accident occurred is among the manned-crossing category.
According to the spot witnesses, the trailer driver got the front of the vehicle out ahead of the gates of the crossing and therefore the gates couldn’t be closed. In an effort to handle the mess created, the trailer driver tried to cross the rail-tracks in a hurry but it was too late.
The driver reportedly applied emergency brakes which slowed the train down considerably but could not bring it to a complete stop and therefore hit the trailer. As a result of the application of the emergency brakes and partially the impact two bogies of the Karachi Express were derailed.
The relief train was operated and the derailed bogies were cleared off the track within an hour of the accident while Awam Express and the Green Line Train were rerouted through the Faisalabad section. Initial unconfirmed reports hinted that the one of the two persons killed in the accident was the driver of the trailer.
