Punjab Commission on Status of Women (PCSW) and White Ribbon Campaign have launched 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence across the province of Punjab. The objective of the campaign was to raise awareness on women’s rights and strengthen support mechanism for victims of violence. The campaign includes marking of White Ribbon Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, awareness activities across nine divisions of Punjab, media campaign, outdoor messaging and much more.
Provincial Minister for Women’s Development Hameeda Waheed-ud-Din, Punjab Commission on the Status of Women, Chairperson Fauzia Viqar and Chief Executive White Ribbon, Omer Aftab spoke to media at the launch of the campaign.
Hameeda Waheed-ud-Din re-affirmed commitment of the Punjab government to ensure a life of dignity and justice for women. Referring to steps taken by the government recently, she mentioned that women’s protection and empowerment was priority of the Punjab government.
Speaking on the occasion, Fauzia Viqar stated that the Commission was taking active steps to promote awareness of women’s rights and providing support to women complainants. She praised the support provided by provincial government departments and district administrations in implementing the Punjab Women’s Empowerment Package.
Omer Aftab stated that the campaign was focused on legal literacy of women and promotion of men’s role in ending violence against women. Stressing on the need for creating awareness among women about their legal rights, he urged legislators for implementation of pro-women laws and removal of discrimination or gaps in existing laws to promote empowerment of women.
The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. It is a time to galvanise action to end violence against women. This year a new sustainable development agenda, which for the first time includes specific targets and indicators on ending violence against women, also replaced the Millennium Development Goals. Internationally, 16 days of activism are celebrated with the theme of “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All!”
