A three-day international conference on medical education began at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Thursday with 37 workshops organised on the first day in various public and private sector medical institutions of the city.
According to a press release, the theme of the conference is “Integrated Curriculum for an Un-integrated Practice”, and it is being organised in collaboration with Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC) and Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF). The three-day moot is endorsed by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR).
More than 500 health professionals, educationists, healthcare delivery providers, policy makers, medical students and allied health specialists are attending the conference including some of the world authorities in medical education from United Kingdom, United States of America, Ireland, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The workshops held on Thursday included: “Integrated assessment for simulation of skills: The possibilities and challenges”, held at Akhtar Saeed Medical College Lahore and facilitated by Dr Gominda Ponnamperuma from Sri Lanka; “Integrating professionalism at under and postgraduate level medical education” held at Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore and facilitated by Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Khan; “Exercising ethics in clinical practice: Mission impossible?”, at Ameer ud Din Medical College Lahore and facilitated by Dr Faiza Ahmed and Dr Aamenah Malik.
The workshop on “Workplace-based assessment” was held at Avicenna Medical College Lahore and conducted by Dr Gulfreen Waheed; Qualitative research-methods and analysis”, held at UHS and facilitated by Dr Usman Mehbood; “How to improve emotional intelligence”, held at CMH Lahore Medical College, Lahore facilitated by Dr Samina Malik; “Becoming a reflective practitioner – the journey is as important as the destination”, was also held at CMH Lahore Medical College which was conducted by Dr Nausheen Bakhat and Dr Syed Shahid Nafees Zaidi.
Dr John R. Boulet from USA facilitated workshop on “Scoring performance-based assessment” and Dr Mowaddat H Rana on “Negotiating a change: skills of effective negotiation” at Fatima Jinnah Medical University Lahore.
The workshop on “Effective power point presentations: Cognitive load theory in action!” was facilitated by Dr Masood Javed at Fatima Memorial Hospital Lahore; “Resolving the dilemma–Are you still teaching on promoting learning?” by Dr Sonia Ijaz Haider at King Edward Medical University Lahore; “Integrating ethics and professionalism in medical education” by Dr Aamir Bashir at Lahore Medical and Dental College Lahore; “Translating WFME standards into a strategic plan of medical colleges” by Dr Syed Moyn Aly at Lahore Medical and Dental College Lahore; “Constructing a test and blueprinting” by Dr John J Norcini and Dr Ara Tekian at Service Institute of Medical Sciences Lahore; “Scientific misconduct, plagiarism and ethical aspects of medical research and writing: What you need to know?” by Dr Farooq Rathore at Service Institute of Medical Sciences Lahore; “Neonatal resuscitation programme (NRP) accredited by the American Academy of Paediatrics by Dr Naveed Sheikh at Service Institute of Medical Sciences Lahore; “Designing and managing postgraduate medical education” by Dr Janet Grant at Shalamar Medical and Dental College Lahore; an workshop on “How to motivate our students” was facilitated by Dr Syed Hasan Shoaib at Shalamar Medical and Dental College Lahore.
