CM orders new sites for disposal of solid waste

Says housing schemes, cooperative societies earning billions can’t be allowed to play with human health

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed his extreme displeasure over the illegal sites for the disposal of solid waste in Lahore and other cities of the province and strongly reprimanded authorities of departments and agencies concerned. He ordered indiscriminate action against the elements causing diseases to the people through throwing garbage in these illegal sites.
He was addressing a meeting through a video link at Civil Secretariat, here Monday, which reviewed measures for the elimination of illegal sites for disposal of solid waste in Lahore and other cities of Punjab. The chief minister said that illegal sites for disposing of garbage continued to be developed in Lahore and other cities while the departments and agencies concerned remained ignorant and paid no attention to their responsibilities.
He said that housing schemes and cooperative societies also dumped garbage at these sites while institutions concerned paid no attention.
He directed that land should be identified for new sites for disposal of solid waste in proper manner and if there was any lacuna in the law regarding action against the elements disposing of garbage at these sites should immediately be removed.
He said that housing schemes and cooperative societies should also be bound to dispose of garbage only at approved sites and no violation in this regard would be tolerated as housing schemes and cooperative societies earning billions of rupees could not be allowed to play with human health.
He asked the officers concerned, was it not the responsibility of their departments to take immediate notice of these sites and action and on receiving no satisfactory answer, he strongly reprimanded the authorities concerned. He said that illegal sites for dumping waste were breeding places for diseases and their immediate elimination was the responsibility of the institutions concerned. He said that elimination of illegal dumping sites for garbage was essential for providing a healthy environment to the masses and the departments concerned would have to work on priority basis in this regard. He issued instructions for setting up a committee for determining lack of coordination between departments and institutions concerned and directed that the committee should submit its final report within three days.
He said that all possible measures would be taken for providing clean atmosphere to the people in the province and the departments concerned would have to play an important role in this regard. He also issued instructions for establishing a steering committee and directed that the committee should monitor short-term measures for elimination of illegal sites for dumping solid waste.

He thanked the people for the victory of PML-N candidate in NA-122. He said that PML-N got success in NA-122 with the support of the people. He said that public welfare and development journey would continue with new determination and development works throughout the province, including Lahore would continue. He said that those opposing the development works had seen the result of their habit. He expressed his belief that they would review their attitude and would not create hurdles in the way of development process. He expressed these views while talking to parliamentarians, here Monday. Assembly Members congratulated the chief minister on the success of PML-N in NA-122. Those who met the chief minister included Sardar Awais Leghari, Sardar Jamal Leghari, Javed Akhtar and Mehmood Qadir Khan.

British High Commissioner in Pakistan Philip Barton called on Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, here Monday. Matters of mutual interest, promotion of bilateral relations and cooperation in different sectors were discussed in the meeting. Talking to the British High Commissioner, the chief minister said that Britain was an important trade partner of Pakistan and was extending commendable cooperation in education, health and other social sectors. He stressed the need for further promotion of trade and economic relations between Pakistan and Britain and said that the two countries should take measures in this regard.
Shahbaz Sharif said that various programmes in education, health and skill development sector were successfully running in Punjab with the cooperation of British Department for International Development(DFID). He said that promotion of education could help in curbing the trend of extremism and terrorism; therefore, the Punjab government was paying special attention to uplift of this sector and state-of-the-art Danish schools had been established in backward districts of the province where quality education was being provided to the students. He said that jobs had been provided to the youths by imparting them various skills under skills development programme and the scope of this programme was being expanded.
He said that skill development programme had enabled thousands of youths to stand on their feet. Similarly, he said, a programme was being implemented with the cooperation of DFID with regard to public health especially mother and child care. He said that relations between Pakistan and Britain had strengthened during the tenure of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He said the Punjab government wanted to expand cooperation with Britain in the development of social sector.
British High Commissioner Philip Barton while speaking on the occasion said that Britain attached great importance to its relations with Pakistan. He said that cooperation with Pakistan would be continued for its progress and development. He said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had taken practical and commendable measures for the progress and prosperity of the people of the province and he was serving the masses with commitment and determination.
