LAHORE
Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) chairman Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi has expressed sorrow over an association of Afghanistan’s religious scholars that issued a religious edict (Fatwa) asking Afghan youths to wage jihad against Pakistan.
Addressing a meeting on Saturday, Ashrafi said the entire Pakistani nation was trying to establish peace in Afghanistan but it was highly condemnable and regrettable that the Afghan Ulema Council (AUC) had issued a decree calling their youths to wage jihad against Pakistan.
He asked the top ulema of Afghanistan to realise the role of Pakistan in restoring peace and rebuilding to their country and raise strong voice against those elements inside Afghanistan who wanted to destabilise bilateral relations of the two countries.
Ashrafi said Pakistan’s prime minister and Army Chief had time and again said that enemies of Afghanistan were enemies of Pakistan. He said after a long struggle the Afghan Taliban were made to sit on a negotiation table with the Afghan government but sinister attempts were being made to sabotage those negotiations.
He said an irresponsible and dangerous edict by some Afghan ulema showed that certain forces in Afghanistan were against establishing peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said those issuing such edicts should know that if the Pakistani nation could make sacrifices for defending Afghanistan against USSR invasion and liberate Afghans from their captivity, it could defend itself much better.
