VCs search committee reconstituted

Nine posts of VC to be advertised soon after CM’s approval

THE Punjab government Tuesday reconstituted Vice-Chancellors (VCs) Search Committee which will make recommendations for the appointment of VCs of 11 different public sector universities in the province during its two-year term.
Of these 11 coveted posts, six will fall vacant during the ongoing year, one next year while the search committee will also be searching for VCs of four new universities this year.
The only change in the VC Search Committee is inclusion of Chairperson of the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) who replaced Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Punjab as a new member.
According to the notification, a copy available with The News, noted industrialist and Pro-Chancellor of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Syed Babar Ali is convener of the VCs Search Committee while the members are Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi of LUMS, MPA Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha and Chairperson PHEC Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin. Secretary of Higher Education Department (HED) Punjab will act as Secretary of the Search Committee.
It is pertinent to mention here that the tenure of the six VCs will expire this year, including that of Dr Sabiha Mansoor VC of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) and Dr Samina Amin Qadir, VC of Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi on July 13, 2015.
The tenure of three VCs, including Dr Khaleeq-ur-Rahman of Government College University (GCU) Lahore, Dr Faiz-ul-Hassan of University of Education Lahore and Dr Syed Khawaja Alqama of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan will expire on July 22, 2015 while that of Dr Mohammad Akram Chaudhry of University of Sargodha (UoS) on October 9, 2015.
The tenure of Punjab University (PU) VC Dr Mujahid Kamran will expire on January 22, 2016.
The four new varsities for which the committee would be searching the VCs include The Ghazi University of Dera Ghazi Khan, Government Sadiq College Women University of Bahawalpur; Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology, Multan and Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering & Technology, Rahim Yar Khan.
Sources privy to the developments said the Higher Education Department recently moved a summary to the chief minister seeking permission to advertise the posts and initiate the process of appointment of vice chancellors whose tenure would be expiring soon along with the appointment of VCs for four new universities.
They said, in the first phase, the process for appointment of vice chancellors of LCWU, FJWU, Government College University Lahore, University of Education and Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan (whose tenures are expiring in May this year) along with The Ghazi University of Dera Ghazi Khan, Government Sadiq College Women University of Bahawalpur, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering & Technology, Multan and Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering and Technology, Rahim Yar Khan would be started soon after the approval of the chief minister.
The sources said the department might seek performance reports of the incumbent VCs who would be applying afresh for the coveted posts.
They said maximum age limit of 65 years would be part of the basic eligibility criteria for applying for the VCs post.
Secretary HED Punjab Muhammad Aslam Kamboh confirming reconstitution of the Search Committee said the VCs posts would be advertised whose tenure would be expiring in near future.
