LAHORE
Nadeem Shad - a lecturer at the Punjab University’s Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAGS) - was abducted and brutally tortured allegedly by some activists of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) late on Thursday night.
It was stated by the said lecturer along with PU Academic Staff Association executive council leaders during a press conference on Friday. Nadeem Shad, Dr Mehboob Hussain, Dr Faheem Aftab, Dr Muqeet Javed, Dr Abid Chaudhry, Dr Sardar Asghar and others strongly condemned the incident and termed it a traditional practice of the IJT activists.
They urged Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to purge the varsity of “terrorists” and take a stern action against the culprits to ensure safety of teachers on the campus. The PU teachers said the IJT’s past was full of similar incidents and there was need to control the hooliganism.
Narrating the incident, Shad - who has been serving the IAGS for the last seven years - said he was on his way to home situated at Barkat Market late on Thursday night after having dinner at Moon Market when he was intercepted near the campus bridge by some alleged IJT activists.
He said they called another five activists who tortured him and abducted him on gunpoint.
Shad alleged that they took him to a tent behind the Jamia Mosque at New Campus as they had broken locks of the gate and tortured him with iron rods. He said the IJT activists had also snatched his CNIC, university card, ATM and cash.
He said the IJT activists detained him for several hours as he showed his wounds to media on the occasion.
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR on the application of Shad, in which the complainant had named IJT activists including Hafiz Abdul Muqeet, Behram Saeed and over a dozen unidentified persons. However, the IJT rejected the allegations and held the PU administration responsible for maligning the student organisation. IJT office bearer Muqeet claimed that his organisation was wrongly being linked with the incident, as they were currently holding a three-day annual convention at the varsity.
He claimed that the PU administration did not grant permission to IJT to hold the event at the last moment so there was no other option as hundreds of students from across the country were arriving to attend the annual convention. He alleged that it was only because of why the PU administration dragged the IJT into the incident.
