The move of appointing an officer of Excise & Taxation department as new director general (DG) has raised concern among civil officers.

The department has been without a DG for almost last one month.

It is important to mention that Humayun Mazher Sheikh, former Director General, was transferred on the basis of number plates scam by the Punjab chief minister.

The number plates issue has not yet resolved despite the fact that the department had just to finalize the bidding process by opening financial bids. Millions of people have yet to receive number plates in spite of the glaring truth that they have already paid for it to the Excise & Taxation department.

The government is going to make another blunder by appointing an officer of the Excise & Taxation its director general. The move has raised concern among the officers of the department as they consider that it will cause further controversy in the department. The need of the hour is that the government should appoint an upright and honest federal/provincial officer as Director General to resolve number plates issue and to devise a robust and effective tax collection mechanism.

The Excise and Taxation Department has never earned good name for the government because of involvement of its officers in corrupt practices. The common man has always been complainant of the treatment he receives from the officials of the department. In these circumstances, the appointment of an Excise & Taxation officer as Director General will be an extremely disappointing decision.
