An infant boy was reunited with his parents on Monday, 44 days after he was abducted from a children’s hospital by the wife of a central prison constable with the help of a facilitator.
Mohammad Hussain, the father of the infant, Muhammad Umer, had visited the Saddar Police Station on October 17 after the abduction of his child from the National Institute of Child Health, where he had been under treatment.
The mother of then 40-day-old Umer had been asleep at the time of the kidnap.
After the case was registered, an investigation team of the South Range police looked at CCTV footage from the hospital and pictures of the couple’s relatives.
Police also spoke to the parents, who suspected the involvement of some of their relatives, said DIG Jamil Ahmed of South Range.
The mother identified a relative, Gulfam Akhtar, a resident of Korangi, from a picture. Police raided Akhtar’s house, but the occupants said he had shifted to Bazarta Lane. The man was later caught during a swoop on his house in that area, but the baby was not there.
During interrogation, Akhtar told the police that the baby was kidnapped by a woman, Rani, wife of central jail constable Rizwan Khan, and that the couple lived in Jaffar Tayyar Society, Malir.
The investigation team then raided the constable’s house and found Umer there. At the time of the raid, Rani tried to avoid arrest by insisting that the infant was her son and his name was Rehan.
