Police officials late on Wednesday night came forward with an official explanation – one that purports that the cop in question was an impersonator – for the video that trended on social media all throughout Wednesday and brought to light a shocking incident of public humiliation and police brutality against a woman in Karachi.
The video clip shows a woman, accused of jewellry theft, being violently forced to confess to the crime right in front of a child, as well as a crowd looking over in the background.
A policeman can be seen repeatedly slapping the woman across the face and hurling a barrage of foul verbal abuse, all the while brashly asserting that his interrogation technique would get her to confess and return the stolen items.
Police excesses are an open secret in Pakistan, where law enforcers largely remain a cause of bother and oppression for the masses they initially swear to protect. However, there have rarely been instances when solid evidence of the police’s high-handedness have been produced.
As per DIG South Jamil Ahmed, the incident took place on 7th Muharram at the Gulf Shopping Centre in Clifton. Interestingly, in his late night statement, the DIG also asserted that the policeman caught on film was an impersonator, and that two officials of the shopping centre’s management had also been arrested over the act.
However, DIG Ahmed also made it a point to mention that an FIR had been lodged against the woman at least 15 months ago on the complaint of a man named Farhan.

CM notice
Following the Geo News report of the shocking video, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah took notice of the incident and ordered Sindh IGP Ghulam Hyder Jamali to submit a report over the matter.
