A supplementary immunisation drive for polio would be launched from October 28 (today) and will continue till Saturday, October 31, in 22 union councils of five towns of Karachi, announced Sindh health minister Jam Mehtab Dahar on Tuesday.
The vaccination drive would be conducted in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gadap, Gulberg, Liaquatabad and North Karachi Towns where more than 300,000 children will be administered polio drops.
The health minister has also issued directions to his department to start a specialisation program in nursing schools for male candidates and students.
He said this while taking notice of a news item according to which there was no program for general specialisation in government nursing schools.
He also directed the director nursing to approach Pakistan Nursing Council to get proper permission for the purpose.
The health minister also took notice of the large number of unregistered hospitals, clinics and maternity homes in Hyderabad and issued directions to the special secretary to initiate action against them or bring them under the legal umbrella.
He said it was alarming that a large number of unregistered hospitals, clinics and maternity homes were operating openly and that too with unlicensed medical practitioners.
On the occasion, the health minister also directed the incharge of dengue control program to take effective measures for carrying out insecticide sprays.
On October 13, the Sindh health minister announced the launch of a four-day anti-polio drive in 14 districts of the province, which aimed to cover around four million children.
The drive which ended on October 15 covered Hyderabad, Larkana, Dadu, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, Khairpur and Kamber.
Earlier, a campaign had been completed in Karachi in which 93,130 children in Baldia, 120,553 children in Bin Qasim, 71,446 children in Gadap, 63,735 children in Gulberg, 91,628 children in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, 30,140 children in Kemari, 57,643 children in Korangi, 36,033 children in Landhi, 28,433 children in Liaquatabad, 30,643 children in Malir, 17,288 children in North Nazimabad, 45,764 children in North Karachi, 92,498 children in Orangi, 7,381 children in Saddar and 120,273 children in the SITE area had been administered polio drops.
