A member of the Shia community was shot dead in what appeared to be a sectarian attack in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on Monday, a day after a senior police officer warned that three terrorist organisations operating as a nexus were planning to carry out attacks in Karachi in the month of Muharram.
In late-night attacks, two more people, including a worker of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), were gunned down.
SHO Jawed Jalbani said Zakir Hussain, 40, who was a member of Al-Hussaini Scouts and lived in Pehlwan Goth, was working at his auto repair shop near Asia Hotel in Block 9, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, when two men on a motorcycle pulled over in front of the shop. The pillion rider walked up to Zakir, confirmed his identity and shot him in the head before escaping with his accomplice.
The injured man was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.
The attackers used a 9mm pistol and a bullet
shell was found at the crime scene.
The SHO said the murder seemed to be a target killing, but the police would look at other lines of inquiry to establish the exact motive.
SSP Jawed Jiskani of District East took notice of the incident and appointed SP Gulshan Division Hassan Sardar Khan as inquiry officer to probe the murder.
Talking to The News on Sunday, counter-terrorism department anti-sectarian intelligence chief Khurram Waris had said that the al Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi had been involved in many terrorist activities in Sindh, including murdering police officials in Karachi, in the recent past.
He had said AQIS was now leading the other two groups.

JSQM man slain
Gunmen killed Nawab Ali, 35, in Chashmah Goth in the Ibrahim Hyderi police remit.
The victim, who was an activist of the JSQM, was near a graveyard when the gunmen shot and killed him. His body was taken to the JPMC for a postmortem. He was hit by two bullets in the chest.
Ali was a resident of Illyas Goth and dealt in the property business.
Police said the murder seemed to be the result of some dispute, but they were investigating other possible motives.

Man shot dead
Gunmen shot and wounded Ishaq Mushtaq, 27, on Kaneez Fatima Road in Surjani Town.
The man was passing through the road when the attackers riding a motorcycle opened fire on him and fled.
Police attended the crime scene and moved the injured to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The victim suffered multiple bullet wounds to his upper torso.
The attackers used a 9mm pistol in the offence and four spent bullet shells were found at the crime scene.
