1,909 school vans impounded so far, says DIG Traffic

Following the city traffic police’s crackdown, started on September 4, against school van operators several vehicle owners had been fined and impounded while drivers had also been arrested, claimed DIG Traffic Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Thursday.
Directives to start an awareness campaign through the traffic police’s FM radio channel were also given.
The DIG Traffic claimed that during the ongoing campaign 1,909 school vans, found in contravention of traffic laws were checked, out of which 1,382 vehicles were sent to the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDIP) for inspection, whereas 527 vehicles were heavily fined and 41 were detained.
According to the HDIP’s report of the vehicles sent for testing, 10 were found to be in extremely bad condition; the report also noted that most of the cylinders were damaged from the inside.
With respect to the radio awareness programme, the DIG stated that two programmes would be conducted on a daily basis, from 11am to 1 pm and from 4pm to 6pm, except on Sundays.
DSP Traffic and Section Officers of the traffic police would attend the programme and attend to complaints and suggestions of the public.
The DIG appealed to the public to give in their valuable suggestions by tuning in to the radio programmes for the betterment of the city traffic police.
