The staff of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Sindh Police foiled a bank robbery in the Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) on Wednesday morning and also arrested the two out of four suspects during the attempt.
The SIU chief, SSP Farooq Awan, said the unit had been informed of the operations of a gang involved in several bank heists which was
planning to robe a branch of the Muslim Commercial
Bank located near Vita Chowrangi, within the remit of Karachi Industrial Area police station.
Hence, police personnel were deputed on the location and when the suspects tried to rob the bank branch they moved in for action and raised the alarm.
The suspects opened fire at the policemen who retaliated.
Two men were arrested after a brief shootout and were shifted to the investigation unit for interrogation but two others slipped away.
The suspects were identified as Imtiaz Mirani and Gul Sher and both were involved in cases of bank robberies and extortion in Karachi and Hyderabad.
SSP Awan said 26 cases of rabberies and extortion were registered in Hyderabad against Imtiaz Mirani since 2009. In 2013 the Sindh government had also declared a cash prize worth Rs300,000 for his arrest.
