The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Karachi police on Friday shot dead two kidnappers and safely rescued a hostage in an operation near the Northern Bypass.
According to SIU officials, Ghous Ahmed, 35, and his family had been on their way home from Super Highway when a flat tyre forced them to stop for repairs near the Al-Habib Restaurant.
When he was replacing the punctured tire, two unidentified men appeared and snatched the families’ cell phones after which they returned and took Ghous away with them at gun point. After a few hours, the family received a call for ransom with the abductors demanding Rs15 million in cash and 40 tolas of gold. The matter was presented before SIU Karachi chief SSP Mohammed Farooq Awan and an investigation team was formed.
The SIU personnel managed to trace the criminals’ location to an area near the Northern Bypass and then raided the hideout on Friday. However, the criminals opened fire at the law enforcers when they approached their hideout.
The SIU personnel returned fire and in the ensuing shootout, two suspects were injured and later died in the law enforcers’ custody. Ghous Ahmed, fortunately, remained unhurt in the melee and was safely reunited with his family.
