At least five more heatstroke patients died on Thursday during treatment at various public and private hospitals in Karachi, according to Sindh director-general of health Dr Hassan Murad Shah.
The death toll due to heatwave in the city has now crossed 1,272 in Karachi and 1,282 in all the province.
With the resumption of sea breeze and a significant drop in the city’s temperature, the number of patients with heat stroke and other related illnesses has also dropped considerably. However, public and private hospitals still continue to report patients who come in with dehydration and diarrhoea, saying diseases caused by contaminated food and water are being reported from different areas of the city.
Meanwhile, most of the heat stroke camps established by different welfare and governmental organisations at hospitals and different areas of the city were removed after weather conditions improved but hospitals remained on high alert with most of the medical and paramedical staff present on emergency duties.
