A bench of the Sindh High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the law officers of provincial and federal governments, and also of the K-Electric, on a petition filed against the unannounced load shedding, permission of illegal connections and over billing by the power utility.
In the application, filed by Rana Faiz-ul-Hasan, it was said that citizens were facing serious hardships due to prolonged power cuts in different areas of the city, which had also resulted in hundreds of deaths on account of the heat.
He stated that in Karachi power production was 2,240 megawatts at the time of privatisation. But now consumption was at 2,780MW and 650MW was received from the national grid.
However, the KE still carried out unannounced prolonged load shedding in different parts of the city and the power utility failed to regulate electricity supply.
He alleged that employees of the power utility were themselves involved in providing illegal power connections to cabins, markets and the cost of those connections was being borne by the customers in shape of excessive billing.
He requested the court to direct the KE to explain the unannounced load shedding and reasons for prolonged load shedding in different parts of the city.
He also asked the court to direct the power utility to ensure removal of illegal power connections from different markets and make efforts for resolving citizens’ complaints against excessive billing.
