The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Thursday suspended 113 city wardens over persistent absence from duties; they would be terminated from service after the completion of legal formalities.
In the ongoing campaign launched to identify ghost employees in government institutions, the provincial minster for local bodies Sharjeel Memon during his visit to the city warden head office on Wednesday had ordered to gather the 103 employees not on duty in order to ascertain their identities; 10 were already facing an inquiry over the matter.
The total strength of the city warden force is 1,441 and apart from the 113 facing legal action, 63 of the remaining 1,328 are also in line for suspension as they were not present on duty on Thursday.
Salary payments to all the suspended wardens were ordered to be held forthwith, saving around Rs30 million annually which would help in timely payment of pensions to retired employees, claimed KMC Administrator Saqib Ahmed Soomro while addressing media representatives.
Other departments would also undergo a similar action, claimed the Administrator. Warning those who were absent on the day, he said an inquiry over their absence would also be held.
Appreciating employees who had been punctual, he added, “Those who did not do their duty should go home, the process is to improve the institution’s efficacy.”
Secretary Local Government Imran Atta Soomro said action against ghost employees in local government institutions was being conducted across the province and had nothing to do with the ongoing operation in the city.
The Special Secretary Local Government Irfan Memon, KMC Metropolitan Commissioner Masood Alam and other Sindh government officers were also present on the occasion.
