Ex-IGP’s guard, teacher among four shot dead

Four people, including a police guard of former provincial police chief Iqbal Mehmood and a teacher, were gunned down in the city on Wednesday.
A police constable deployed for security duty at the residence of former Sindh police chief Iqbal Mehmood was found with multiple bullet injuries in Sector 51-C of Korangi area and later succumbed to his wounds at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Five police personnel have so far been killed in Karachi this month, and 28 since January.
The deceased was identified as Constable Sajid Salman, 35. He had left his house in Landhi with a friend late Tuesday night and later was found injured with multiple bullet wounds in Sector 51-C of Korangi.
Ibrahim Hyderi SHO Naek Mohammad Jakherani said according to the brother of the deceased, the late constable had left his house with an acquaintance, Noman Aziz, and was later found injured near Chowrangi No 5. He was rushed to Jinnah hospital in an ambulance but he passed away during treatment.
SHO Jakherani said the police was looking for Noman Aziz, who was last seen with the deceased constable, to reveal the circumstances under which his companion was killed.
However, the SHO clarified that the constable was not targeted.
In a separate incident, a police official posted in the anti-corruption department, Iqbal Aslam, was shot and injured by unidentified robbers near Water Pump Chowrangi, within the remit of Gulberg police station.
The police said the policeman had been returning home when armed men tried to snatch his valuables at gunpoint. When he put up a resistance, the robbers opened fire and fled.
He was taken to a hospital and was said to be in stable condition.

Teacher killed
Faiq Zafar, 35, was shot dead while putting up a resistance to armed robbers in Chatriwalla Coaching Centre, situated in Khamosh Colony of Nazimabad, within the remit of Gulbahar police station.
Gulbahar SHO Arif Razzaq said the deceased was a resident of the same area.
He said on Wednesday night two armed men on a motorcycle arrived entered the coaching centre and tried to snatch his cellphone at gunpoint. When Zafar put up a resistance, the robbers shot at him and fled.
However, a patrolling mobile of the Gulbahar police station saw the fleeing suspects who opened fire at them while passing by.
The policemen retaliated and after a brief shootout managed to arrest an Afaq Ahmed with a pistol while his associate escaped.
Zafar was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during the treatment. He received bullet wounds in his chest.
Woman shot dead
A woman, identified as Yasmin Sabir, 35, was killed by unidentified armed men in her house situated in Ali Brohi Goth, within the remit of Ibrahim Hyderi police station.
SHO Naek Muhammad Jakherani said someone knocked on the door of the house early in the morning and when Yasmin opened the door she was shot in the neck.
She was rushed to a hospital but she died during treatment.
SHO Jakherani said the husband of the deceased told the police that he had an old enmity and this was probably why his wife was killed. He registered a case against them and the police were now searching for the nominated suspects, he added.

Body found
The body of an unidentified man, who had been tortured to death, was found from Jamali Goth within the remit of Sohrab Goth police station on Wednesday.
SHO Fasih-uz-Zaman said the age of the deceased appeared to be in the mid thirties the body bore marks of brutal torture.
He said the victim had been kidnapped from another part of the city and his body was later dumped in Jamali Goth.

Two criminals killed
Two suspected criminals, including an arrested accused, were killed in a shootout with the Shorab Goth police in Bantwa Memon Society.
According to the Sohrab Goth SHO Fasih-uz-Zaman, the police had arrested an accused Noorullah a few days ago and during interrogation he had pointed out the location of his accomplices involved in criminal activities.
Subsequently, the Sohrab Goth police took Noorullah along to arrest his accomplices living in Bantwa Memon Society where armed criminals attacked the police party and killed Noorullah.
However, said the SHO, in retaliatory firing by the police, one of the attackers was also killed while some of the accused also managed to flee under the cover of fire.
He said the police were conducting raids to arrest the remaining suspects while weapons and ammunitions were also recovered from one of the unidentified attackers who was killed by retaliatory firing.
