Karachi

The city-based fishermen threatened on Friday to block the ship channels at both the Karachi Port and Port Qasim if the government did not cancel the twin islands deal immediately.

A large number of men and women belonging to fishing community brought out a protest demonstration from Sindh Assembly building to the Karachi Press Club, demanding of the government to cancel the mega project deal since these islands, located between Ibrahim Hydri and Bahrai Town, happen to be the traditional routes for fishing boats and vessels.

The procession was led by Chairperson Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Mohammad Ali Shah, Saeed Baloch, Majid Motani, Tahira Ali, Yousif Kadani and Shujauddin Qureshi of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammed Ali Shah asked the government to immediately cancel the deal and take the community into confidence or else they would bring hundreds of thousands of fishermen to block the ship channels of major ports in protest.

“We will not allow building these island cities by any foreign investment firm because these islands are our source of livelihood,” he declared.

Shah reiterated the demand to ensure basic facilities to the people living in these villages since ages instead of launching such mega projects by destroying their source of livelihood.
