UET VC directed to de-notify appointment of registrar, controller

LAHORE: The Higher Education Department (HED) Punjab has directed the Vice Chancellor of the University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore to de-notify illegal appointments of the university’s Registrar and Controller of Examinations.

In a letter to the UET VC, a copy available with The News, the department also warned that in case of non-compliance, a complete reference against the VC shall be forwarded to the Chancellor. As per the letter, the HED had constituted a committee to probe allegations leveled against UET Registrar Muhammad Asif and others, pointed out in the complaint referred by NAB in compliance with the orders of the Lahore High Court in writ petition No. 177820/2018 and a reference received from the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Punjab. The committee had forwarded its probe report to the Secretary HED, who after examining the report, directed the VC to de-notify the appointment of UET Registrar Muhammad Asif and Controller of Exams Muhammad Zargham Nusrat.

“The Vice Chancellor and Resident Auditor of UET, Lahore, are required to work out all cases of appointments made on the basis of private sector experience within one month and the Vice Chancellor to place them before the Syndicate for their treatment as per law under intimation to the Department,” reads the letter.

The UET VC has further been directed to curtail the number of Deputy Registrars appointed over and above the budgeted/sanctioned posts through Selection Board of 2009, as already directed by the department.

When contacted Acting Vice Chancellor of the UET Prof Dr Aziz Akbar said a meeting of the Syndicate had been convened on next Monday (March 18) with a single agenda item related to the HED letter. To a question whether the officials had been denotified or not, he said the Syndicate was the competent authority to take such decisions and added it would be taken up in the March 18 meeting.

According to a press release, Ambassador European Union Jean-Francois Cautain was the chief guest on the occasion whereas Tevta Chairman and Secretary Industries Nadeem-ur-Rehman, Justice (Retd) Nasira Javed Iqbal and Tevta COO Akhtar Abbas Bharwana were present.

Ambassador Jean-Francois Cautain said Pakistan should take benefit from GSP plus status. He said access to European market was not an easy task and Pakistan must take benefit from this.

He was of the view that women in Pakistan were very talented and skilled and added they should be part of workforce. There is a dire need to increase opportunities for women because women play a crucial role in development of a country, he added.

Nadeem-ur-Rehman said Pakistan could be made economically strong by providing technical education to women. In this regard Tevta was providing technical education to 30,000 women in 20 different trades, he added. Akhtar Bharwana said Tevta was offering courses keeping in view the demand of industry and latest technology.
