Daska’s lone library in a shambles

From Our Correspondent

DASKA: People are facing numerous problems after the shifting of Municipal Library six months ago.

There is only library for 1.1 million people across the tehsil. Municipal Library was set up 40 years ago. The newly building was constructed in 2004. About six months ago, the building was demolished after the district administration declared it encroachment and ordered to vacate it for its early demolition.

The library was shifted to an old room near Water Tanki No 2 on College Road and 3,000 rare books were placed there after packing them in bags. The room is too suffocated, dusty and filthy to sit. The noise of traffic and water motors makes it impossible to study there. The rare books and newspapers and furniture are destroying in the shabby place. The TMA officials have dumped all the bags in the one-room library where the sanitary staffers have already kept their luggage. There is no space for the library staff and readers to sit there.

People from different walks of life have demanded the authorities concerned construct the library building immediately. When contacted, the TMA officials said that Municipal Library had been shifted to another place in hurry after the final notice was given to the library management. They said that presently 1.1 million people had been deprived of library facilities, including Urdu and English national dailies. The officials said that the Daska TMA had neither alternate place nor funds for its construction.
