LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested five accused - including four bankers and a urea dealer - in connection with Rs 1.6 billion National Fertilizer Marketing Ltd (NFML) case.
Those arrested persons are: Tauqeer Hasan, Farooq Khan, , Farooq Ehsan Bhatti , Yasir Nazir and Abdul Rehman Bhatti, (urea dealer). According to a press release issued on Thursday, the accused have been arrested on the allegations of forgery, fraud, misuse of authority and causing loss to national exchequer. The accused, in connivance with others, helped the dealers purchase more than 59,000 metric tonnes of urea in back dates on rates less than the ones applicable at that time.
According to the statement, the arrested bank officers facilitated the dealers in this criminal act by preparing bankers cheques in back dates. This act created artificial shortage in the market and caused panic among the farmers. The accused have been remanded into physical custody with NAB till December 8. The NAB has already arrested 10 accused persons in the case.
